Over the last ten years, therapists have been given more and more permission to use self-disclosure as a primary intervention in which to help facilitate change with their clients. However, there has not been much training or discussion on how to ethically use self-disclosure in a way that keeps counselor boundaries intact while also enhancing the therapeutic process.

This CEU Training looks at the different types of therapeutic self-disclosure, how to use them effectively, when to use them, and the ethics behind them. A live or video-recorded therapy session will be used to demonstrate effective self-disclosure in session.

This training will review some of the basic tenets of AEDP and then will spend the rest of the time discussing how this approach to therapy can be used in working with distressed couples. The training will also overview some components of Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy and how the two approaches can work together.

We will be looking at the neurology of couples as they interact and will also discover how to work within their attachment needs.

This can come in the form of touch, affirmation, self-disclosure, and many other ways. We will address diagnoses related to Riley while also looking at other themes portrayed in the film, for instance, how to identify somatic markers when working with anxiety, how to help your clients listen to and metabolize these emotions and the role of co-regulation. We want to leave you with tangible ways to help your clients when these emotions emerge.

Therapists are often asked about the rules of engagement with clients outside of the session. The reasons for client contact between sessions are vast, but it is discussed very little in training programs or as part of supervision. This ethics training examines standard ethical practices in initiating and responding to client contact between sessions.

We will examine types of contact, frequency, and the therapeutic benefits and drawbacks of between-session contact. We will also investigate the different codes of ethics and information the licensure board provides.
